In order to increase time for teachers to meet the individual learning needs of students, we at the ISC understand our mission is to enable these opportunities to the very best of our ability. To achieve this mission we have focused our work on putting the administrative and instructional resources for FCSD within a very specific framework. The four sides of this framework are:

Easy Interface-Steve Jobs, when he introduced the iPhone, spoke very eloquently about technology that is not easy to use is really dumb technology. At FCSD our hardware & software must have an interface that is easy for the users. For example, Google has an easy interface, Lotus Notes does not.

Personal-Technology that does not meet the needs of the individual using it, is no good. If the technology does not meet the user where they last left it, than it is a waste of time. An example of personal technology might be a student who logs-in to the school library system called Destiny Quest they are immediately shown their favorite books and suggestions of books they might like based on their personal reading preferences.

Web Accessible-Technology that works only on local machines or on specific operating systems like Windows or Apple keeps the digital divide wide and grossly restricts opportunities for students to access technology resources outside of their classroom. This blog is an excellent example as a student/teacher can write on a blog from any computer with a connection to the Internet.

Technical Standards-Bottom line here is that the technology must fall within the parameters of our technology support staff ability to support it. For example, at Fairport our support staff is very small, but exceptionally competent so we are able support software from a central office at the ISC. There is simply not enough of them to physically load/support software on each individual computer in the district.

So our goal is to move our instructional and administrative technologies within this framework by 2011….and thereby helping us all to be more efficient with our time, reduce costs, and improve student learning.
