Internet Safety

The term “Internet” has never been more ambiguous for teachers and parents. In the old days (5-8 years ago) it meant the World Wide Web (WWW). At home “Internet” most likely means surfing the WWW. At school “Internet” is different. The differences are:

1. MONROE #1 BOCES provides the Internet connection to Fairport and they apply a content filter to minimize the potential of encountering troubling content.

2. Many applications are “Web based” which means it appears as though computer users are on the WWW, when actually they are inside the Fairport Network. For example, when students look for library materials it appears to them as though they are on the WWW as they look for the materials via Explorer or Firefox when in fact they are not out on the WWW.

Eventually most, if not all, applications will be on the “Internet”.
